More States Across Nation Enacting Social Media Privacy Laws
More than 20 states have enacted social media privacy legislation and the list of states is growing. For example, employers in Oregon cannot require an employee or candidate to create a social media account as a condition of employment. In Main, a law preventing employers from requiring employees or job applicants to disclose social media passwords takes effect next month. It also prohibits an employer from terminating or penalizing an employee or refusing to hire an applicant for refusing to grant access to his or her social media accounts in the employer’s presence or add the employer to contact lists. Employers should make themselves aware of existing social media privacy laws in their states. Reported by Lexology’s Dickman & El-Amin.
