Elevator mechanics are responsible for repairing elevators when they are out of service and carrying out routine maintenance in order to prevent breakdowns from occurring, as well as replacing parts of elevators when necessary. The ability to use hand and power tools is important, and the job may occasionally involve high pressure in emergency situations. Strong problem-solving skills are also important in order to identify and troubleshoot problems, such as in brakes, switches, motors, or electronic control systems. Adjustments should be made so that the elevator runs smoothly, and once repaired, the mechanic must test it to ensure it is fully repaired.
Elevator Mechanics who reported more years of relevant experience also reported higher earnings. Those in the early stages of their career can expect to make around $52K; however, individuals with five to 10 years of experience bring in $75K on average — a distinctly larger sum.
